Rocket Vinyasa Workshop Weekend

People ask me as soon as they hear this name.  To keep it simple, I respond, “It’s just yoga!” as Larry Schultz (the creator of this style) used to say.  If you are expecting a more, let’s say, specific answer, I can tell you that this style is rooted in the traditional Ashtanga Yoga but adds a progressive way to it, a non-traditional kind of method, western-style system, breaking the hierarchy.” — Gil Perez 
Whether you have been practicing Ashtanga or Vinyasa for years or are simply interested in learning and exploring a new yoga style, any or all of these Rocket Workshops are for you! 

$35 per class/workshop in advance, $40 at the door

Friday, February 23rd from 6-9pm

Kick-off your Rocket Weekend by learning about the origin of Rocket Yoga, including sequencing and style basics.  Covering Ujjayi Pranayama, Bandhas, Drishti, Sun Salutations, and modified standing and seated sequences, this class and workshop provides an introduction to Ashtanga Yoga and the Rocket Series and will help you learn how to develop your own therapeutic and healing home practice.

Ground yourself by understanding the background, history, and philosophy of Rocket Yoga.  Using the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali as a guide, the fundamental approach of the Rocket practice, both on and off the mat, will be discussed and explored.  Note: this particular session does not include asana, or physical, practice.
With a more clear vision of the Rocket System, you will then be guided through a basic approach of the Rocket Sequence. This introductory class and workshop includes Sun Salutations and other fundamental postures derived from the Ashtanga sequence. Additionally, you will learn valuable information on the use of props and modified versions of postures to consider and account for any injuries and conditions.  


Sunday, February 25th from 12:30pm-2:30pm

105F South Loop (47 W. Polk)

Using postures from the primary, intermediate, and advanced series from Ashtanga Yoga and sequencing them around the body’s joints to create an uplifting effect, you will be led through the Rocket 1 series that purifies, strengthens, develops flexibility, stamina, and “feel-good” energy.  Focusing on strengthening the legs, shoulders, and abdominals, this workshop and class includes balancing and hip opening postures, arm balance/inversions, jump back and jump through techniques, drills for the core, and more.

About Gil

Searching for a healthier lifestyle, Gil Perez started practicing yoga in Puerto Rico in 2009 at the age of 37. Gil originally found yoga to be both difficult and painful, but he stuck with because it also brought him a sense of peace. He began training to become a yoga teacher in Rishikesh Yog Peeth, India, in the summer of 2010. Shortly after, he returned to Puerto Rico and started teaching Hatha Yoga while practicing Ashtanga Yoga and Rocket Yoga under the tutelage of David Kyle. Gil’s primary personal practice and teaching methods now center around Ashtanga and Rocket Yoga.

Gil then taught yoga in several maximum security prisons with the Correctional Department of Puerto Rico, where he led the yoga program for inmates for two years. The program was designed to help reduce inmates’ impulsive behaviors, and to encourage empathy in order to reduce the likelihood of recidivism.

In 2016, he relocated to Austin, where he currently teaches classes and workshops at Yoga Yoga, Treehouse Yoga, Wildheart Yoga, Bikram Yoga East Austin, and Stretch. He has also conducted Rocket Yoga workshops and special classes at Wanderlust Yoga and Yoga Vida in Austin, Casa Yoga in Laredo, Bikram Yoga Richardson and Second Side Yoga in Dallas, Hot Box Yoga in El Paso, and this past summer, assisted Gianna Purcell at our 105F Rocket Teacher Training in Chicago.  

Gil is eager to expand his teaching practice. He can adapt his curriculum to individuals or groups at any level from Restorative to Beginning Hatha to Ashtanga and/or Rocket Yoga.
